AI Literacy: Free Classes from Google and Adobe That Certify Educators via Tech & Learning | Artificial Intelligence in Secondary Education | Scoop.it
Build your AI literacy with these free courses

Via Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
I love that the tech giants like Google and Adobe are offering free courses for educators.  So many educators could benefit from the use of generative AI but are not comfortable with how it can be used, why it should be used and how to protect student data and the cheating/plagiarism that is often associated with AI.  Both of these courses are short and did I mention...FREE!  I think they would be a great way to introduce school administrators and teachers to AI and hopefully encourage them to start using the tools we have at our fingertips.

Understanding the source of what we see and hear online | OpenAI | Artificial Intelligence in Secondary Education | Scoop.it
Today we’re introducing new technology to help researchers identify content created by our tools and joining the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity Steering Committee to promote industry standards.
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and it is important for us as educators to recognize how to utilize it in a responsible manner and teach our students to use it responsibly as well.  AI can be used in a way to deceive people as well as create content that is not authentic.  Teaching users of AI to ensure that what they create when it comes to images and audio is authentic and quality content is such an important key.  This article discusses how OpenAI, the company who released ChatGPT, is addressing these important issues.

With Khanmigo for Teachers, K-12 educators can spend less time prepping lessons and more time with students. Here's how to sign up.
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
I am a huge fan of all things free for educators and I have explored some of the features that Khan Academy has for teachers but I am new to their artificial intelligence features. Khan academy has recently launched an amazing free platform that will help not only students but teachers provide support, develop lessons and create lessons that can engage students and save teachers time.

There are a lot of free features with this platform but if you want to explore the paid features it is not super expensive.  Khan Academy and Microsoft have always been very supportive of educators and according to this article, they will continue to be that way going forward.

Jeanna Martinez's insight:
Artificial intelligence avatar generators is a faucet of AI I have not yet explored.  This article is a great read for someone like me who would like to delve into avatar generation. There are legal and ethical implications that I would have never even considered before finding this article.

I can also see how students might use avatar generators when creating presentations.  Many students have fears and anxiety over the idea of presenting.  Having the ability to use an AI generated avatar that has traits of the students but has been created by the students might help give them confidence and increase buy in and engagement.

The world's leading artificial intelligence companies pledged at the start of a mini summit on AI to develop the technology safely, including pulling the plug if they can't rein in the most extreme risks.
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
The risks and fears surrounding artificial intelligence have been around as long as AI has been a mere idea.  The major AI companies like Meta, Google and Open AI are fully aware of these fears and, according to this article are actively working to ensure the safe use of artificial intelligence.  This most definitely translates into the world of education using generative artificial intelligence.

It is important for us as educators who are using artificial intelligence and helping students use and understand how to safely use generative AI programs to follow what big tech companies are doing to ensure safety for AI users.

GPT-4o is just the latest in artificial intelligence innovation.  The applications of this technology are just being unearthed and its benefits to both teachers and students is groundbreaking.  This technology can help learners prepare for interviews, study for tests and even have "debates" with its users.  I know there are still some fears out there about this new technology but it is here and the more we as educators learn about it and the more comfortable we are with it the less scary it might be.

Jeanna Martinez's insight:
Bill Gates is weighing in on the topic of artificial intelligence in education.  According to the article he is a big fan of the founder of Khan Academy, Salman Khan.  The article focuses on the book recently released by Khan entitled "Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education (and Why That's a Good Thing)" .  Gates believes this book is a must read for anyone who is in the Education field.

We are quickly moving toward the idea that education and technology go hand in hand and educators are embracing concepts like artificial intelligence.  AI is something that we need to learn to utilize and not be afraid to let our students utilize it as well.

How to reimagine summer school for holistic recovery

How to reimagine summer school for holistic recovery | Artificial Intelligence in Secondary Education | Scoop.it
As districts navigate the post-COVID landscape, reimagining summer school as a comprehensive educational recovery initiative is a necessity.
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
This is a really great article outlining some of the applications for AI in designing and planning for summer school.  Students who have to attend summer school for academic or attendance purposes are often some of the students who are the least engaged when it comes to academics.  As stated in the article, being able to tailor a lesson for the individual interest of a student will very likely increase their engagement and that will lead to a much higher chance of mastery.  The example in the article stated that while the student may not like geometry a lesson in geometry centered around his favorite sport will improve the chance of success.

The other side of summer school that is very important to address is SEL and mental health of the students.  The article also discusses how AI can help teachers and administrators with that aspect of education as well.

Jeanna Martinez's insight:
This is a really good TED talk on how artificial intelligence can benefit teachers and students while not just  giving the answers to the students.  I really like the KHAN Academy bot tutor he discusses.  The discussion between the student and the bot is also recorded and viewable by the teacher.  This allows each student to have their own dedicated "tutor" who is available 24/7.  The tutor will not give the answers if asked but will provide guidance and help the student get to the answer on their own.  I have not used Khan Academy much but thank to this TED talk I realize that it is much more than just videos.  The debate feature and the ability to ask the bot questions and get answers from the voice of a particular person (scientist, historical figure, author, etc.).  The writing feature and reading comprehension tools allow students to enhance their writing skills and reading comprehension in ways they have never before had the ability to.

Khan academy AI also has features for teachers.  Going into teacher mode gives the teacher the ability to have some guidance on how to teach a particular concept and help create lesson plans for the teacher.

Jeanna Martinez's insight:
This article gives some great insight into using generative AI like chatGPT to create "Do Now" activities or bell ringers.  I love the idea of starting the "chat" by indicating your role (8th grade science teacher), the goal (kick off a new lesson on...), the task (be specific on the type of activity or activities) and extra information (adding this will tailor the AI's replies to better fit what you are wanting to create).  I like that the author give examples of how to start the chat and includes some of the benefits of using generative AI in the classroom and in your planning.

EdTech Tug of War: Teacher Choice vs. District Mandates | Artificial Intelligence in Secondary Education | Scoop.it
Should we emphasize teacher choice in classroom resources, or are students better off when district leaders play a more hands-on role?
Jeanna Martinez's insight:
Although this article is not directly addressing Artificial Intelligence I feel like it is a great addition to this topic.  This article discusses the struggle between district or state mandates and teacher choice when it comes to technology.  This article is more of a general discussion on technology including apps and programs.  It also delves into how Covid and the rapid transition to online learning that we all experienced and how that changed the relationship between technology and education.  I believe that AI is the "next new thing" and there will be some push and pull between teachers and district or state requirements.  As a teacher I wish we were given more of a voice when it comes to the things we can use in our classrooms but I do see the importance of technology specialists regulating and monitoring the programs and apps for effectiveness and usability.
