Librarians Supporting Schools in Lockdown | Library Insights

Librarians Supporting Schools in Lockdown | Library Insights | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

“If you build it, they will come”

This quote from 80s baseball film Field of Dreams is how I feel about school libraries! My own school, a large independent secondary day school in West London, has a well-funded, well-staffed library. In the current crisis, access to quality information and to books and recreational reading has never been more important for students.

These cool school libraries encourage students to read

These cool school libraries encourage students to read | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Today, school libraries look quite different than they did when previous generations attended school.

Instead of rows of long tables and shelves filled with dusty books, school libraries now provide flexible and group learning spaces, movable furniture, iPads and computers, learning pods, and more.

Architects are being hired in certain schools to completely re-design and transform libraries to attract students to not only read, but use the space to their own advantage.

By making these facilities visually appealing, as well as comfortable and playful with elements such as reading nooks and beanbags, kids are more engaged and inspired to enjoy reading and learning.

Creating a Diverse Classroom Library

Creating a Diverse Classroom Library | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The library is the physical and metaphorical center of my classroom. It is a reading world adorned with a carpet, comfy chairs, a lamp, and bins of neatly organized books. When I remember my own childhood, I picture a colorful tapestry woven by the hundreds of worlds I visited through the pages of books.

Imagine my surprise when one of my students commented about what I thought was a magical space, “I’m tired of reading about white kids.”

#LibFive: Five Key Foundations for Building Inclusive Libraries

#LibFive: Five Key Foundations for Building Inclusive Libraries | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Julie Stivers writes: "Is there anyone more equipped to meaningfully speak on the concept of inclusive libraries than our students or patrons? Of course not. Of course not. To leverage students’ experience, perspective, and wisdom—and to create student-driven PD—I worked with three of our amazing 8th grade students at Mount Vernon Middle School to develop student-led training for librarians."

What a GREAT article! I'm so inspired by Julie and the students who created the LibFive. This should be required reading for everyone who works in a school library! And great timing, as I'll be going back to school next week, and looking at my library and my practice with a new perspective.

Big leap for school libraries

Big leap for school libraries | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Steven Yates has a message for would-be school librarians. “If you’re coming to this because you like to read and you want to manage a collection of books, then you showed up about 30 years too late to the profession,” says Yates, a former high school librarian who teaches in the school library media certification program at the University of Alabama.

The school library’s mission—matching resources with those who need them—has not changed, he says. But its role is evolving: With materials increasingly offered online, schools are transforming their libraries into active places for students to work together and get creative, with staff who do much more than manage books.

Evaluating and Improving the School Library User Experience

Evaluating and Improving the School Library User Experience | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Hannah Byrd Little writes: "Seven recognized factors impact or influence the user experience. Though some of the factors seem similar, I hope to explain the nuanced differences.  Since school librarians are the librarians who “do it all” in their libraries, they need to be concerned with the user experience."

This article is so timely! I'm back at work, revising my orientation presentations, setting up book displays and doing all the other beginning of the school year tasks. This is my ninth year in this library, and it's fascinating to look back on all the changes we've made. Even with our recent renovations, it's important to assess how our library works for our students and staff. Hannah's framework provides a way to evaluate your library from the user viewpoint. (It's also prompted me to work on a survey for returning students on their user experience in our library!)

Why do teachers need librarians? by @elizabethutch –

Why do teachers need librarians? by @elizabethutch – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

How often have you walked passed your school library and never given a second thought to the person who works in that room? Or you notice that there are students in there reading books and working on the computers and think ‘that’s nice’. You may even encourage your students to go and choose a book occasionally and think that you are doing your bit.

What if someone suddenly said that your school library was closing and the room was going to become a gym. Would you really be upset by the loss of such a resources or would you secretly not be all that bothered? Do you ever think about the person who is working in there who is desperate to help you and your students? Do you ever wonder why that person is constantly trying to stop you in the corridor when you are busy? Do you understand the opportunities you are missing?

Back-to-School Checklist for a Learner-Ready School Library

Back-to-School Checklist for a Learner-Ready School Library  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Kathryn Roots Lewis writes: "What’s on your school library back-to-school checklist? Do you have a learner-ready school library?

I’m kind of like a second-grader when it comes to a new school year. I love new school supplies and the excitement of seeing all the people I’ve missed over the summer. My feelings about a new school year may resonate with you, but sadly they do not resonate with all of our learners.

As I thought about posting a blog at this time of year, I contemplated what I share with new teachers, principals, and administrators about school libraries in my district. I began to rethink what it is that they all need to know. What do our learners need to know? What do you want them to feel when they come to the school library?"

Wow, I'm feeling overwhelmed just reading this list! I love how Kathryn covers all the areas that librarians need to address at the beginning of the year. I do most of these things but it's always great to see them from a fresh perspective.

Making the library the true heart of the school - SCIS

Making the library the true heart of the school - SCIS | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Caroline Roche, founder of the Heart of the School website, writes about the need to advocate for and share stories from school libraries — and what makes them the heart of the school.

That the library is the ‘heart of the school’ is a commonly accepted phrase nowadays, certainly in the United Kingdom. You see it in ads for a new librarian, you see it in tweets, you see it in newspaper articles, and it is even the title of the All Party Parliamentary Group white paper on school libraries: ‘The beating heart of the school’. But where does this phrase that is so ubiquitous now come from? Well, actually, I know. It is a phrase that fills me with pride, because it is the name of the website I set up seven years ago to celebrate the work of school librarians. You can visit the Heart of the School website and follow the Twitter feed @HeartOTSchool. There is also a Facebook page.

Dive Brief:
As books gave way to digital sources of information instantly accessible from anywhere, school libraries and librarians were put under pressure to reinvent themselves, according to eSchool News.
School librarians are still supporting reading, writing and research skills, but with a co-focus on digital literacy as well.
The digital workshop is one 21st century learning opportunity that school librarians are implementing. Students learn coding and valuable social skills, including teamwork.

Despite the general rule for quiet demanded by libraries, they’ve been the subject of some fairly significant noise this week.

Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, with eight former Children’s Laureates, have written an open letter to Justine Greening, the Secretary of State for Education, demanding an investigation into school library service closures.
